To maximize seating [especially with children, consider a bench on one side or two. To seat 2 people at the ends of a table, consider a 48″ width [as opposed to standard 42]. The general guideline for seating is 2 ft table length/person based on roughly 19″ chair width. One way you can extend the size of an island top is to extend beyond the end of the cabinetry and add a centre post. We did for this Wiarton customer; expanding the usefulness of their island. See pics below!

Our reclaimed wood tops are made from old pioneer barn floor boards [“threshing floor”]. We keep nearly all the original distressing but then fill with a durable/wateproof epoxy + polyurethane [to bring the shine down] clearcoat finish. Check out this large restaurant table tops project we did:
