Maintaining Authentic Pioneer Barnwood Distressing in Old Ontario Barnwood

The way we get the unique look of our tables in our keeping of almost all the old barnwood distressing. The wood comes in from the pioneer barn twisted,cupped, cracked and many other things after being a barn floor board for 100+ years. By doing everything by hand and other methods, we’re able to take out twists ect while maintaining the distressing and having a flat table surface. Reclaimed Hemlock Barnwood Table with Epoxy + Polyurethane Finish

Our epoxy finish fills in all the deep, authentic barnwood distressing. Epoxy is very glossy. To bring down the shine, we topcoat with a thick polyurethane finish. This can be done in matte, satin or high gloss. Here’s some closeup shots of a recent sawbuck table project that really show the finish:

The Trestle style base we offer is great for maximizing seating. With no posts on the corners; and a narrower centre post; taller people won’t hit their knees. See pics of this base option below!

To keep the natural colour of unfinished, while still benefiting from the benefit of the clearcoat epoxy + polyurethane finish, consider our greytone treatment. Check out this reclaimed trestle table project that had this option:

Our epoxy finish fills in all the original distressing we maintain, while also making the soft barnwood we use durable/wateproof/ good to spill on. Check out this previous hemlock table with a sawbuck base:

The colour of our custom harvest tables comes from the age of the wood. The more we sand, the lighter the wood gets [as we get through the old wood patina]. For the reclaimed wood table project, we did a heavier sand to bring out the lighter tones.

Our boardroom tables are made from 100% old Ontario barnwood [southwestern Ontario]. For a more modern look, some of our customers opt for a U Shaped metal option; see pics below of a previous project!

An alternative to our threshing floor sawbuck base is a beam style. This northern Ontario cottage customer opted for this option [see pics below]. We also provided custom finished Mill chairs in wormy maple.
