One way you can extend the size of an island top is to extend beyond the end of the cabinetry and add a centre post. We did for this Wiarton customer; expanding the usefulness of their island. See pics below!

Our reclaimed wood tops are made from old pioneer barn floor boards [“threshing floor”]. We keep nearly all the original distressing but then fill with a durable/wateproof epoxy + polyurethane [to bring the shine down] clearcoat finish. Check out this large restaurant table tops project we did:

While most of customers opt for the epoxy + polyurethane 2 stage finish [or a light epoxy thickness, medium thickness option], for the most extreme rustic look, we can skip the filling stage completely. While this will forgo a lot of practicality in terms of cleaning and durability, it may be the best option; just depends on how you are going to use to the table.
